HOW TO APPLY FOR ADMISSIONS INTO TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN NIGERIA

Universities Polytechnics Colleges of Education Others

Admissions into universities, polytechnics, monotechnics, and colleges of education and agriculture are administered only by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). The body conducts the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for prospective university students seeking entrance into any of the tertiary institutions in the country. Thus, all prospective students must apply, obtain the examination forms, write the examination and obtain good scores for admission into the [prospective school and course of study.

An alternative route to obtaining admissions is through the Direct Entry procedure. This implies first obtaining some qualifications other than the SSCE/GCE O level. Some of these additional qualifications include the GCE Advanced level. In that case you need not write the UTME but apply for a direct admission but still through the JAMB.



UNIVERSITIES

A prospective University student must:

i. be above 16 years of age

ii. Meet the minimum entry requirements as prescribed by JAMB and by the University.

Methods of Admission into the Universities

There are three methods of admission into any University. These are:


i. Through JAMB (UTME)
 
ii. By Direct Entry

iii. By Direct Transfer

(A) Admission through JAMB (UTME).

To qualify for admission through JAMB, a prospective Student must first have obtained:

i. His/Her SSCE or NECO or GCE O’ Level with Credit in five subjects including English and Mathematics and an approved in not more than two sittings.

ii. Three credit passes in the SSCE or NECO or GCE O Level obtained at one sitting plus two merit passes in Teachers Grade II Certificate. The passes should include English, Mathematics and an approved science subject.


(B) Admission by Direct Entry:


i. SSCE or NECO or GCE Ordinary Level plus the Higher School Certificate/GCE Advanced Level with passes in two subjects at Principal or Advanced Level together with passes at subsidiary or credit level in three other subjects obtained at not more than two sittings.

ii. School Certificate/GCE Ordinary Level and the Higher School Certificate/GCE Advanced Level with passes in three subjects at Principal or Advanced Level together with a pass in one other subject at subsidiary or credit level obtained at not more than two sittings.

iii Higher School Certificate/GCE Advanced Level with passes in four subjects at Principal Level obtained at not more than two sittings.

iv. School Certificate or its equivalent with at least four credit level passes and a pass in English Language plus approved 2-year Diploma.

v Post-secondary qualifications beyond the levels of 2(ii) (a)-(c) above. Such qualifications include degree and diplomas recognized by the particular
University.

vi. Diploma of the particular University with the degree programme in the respective area of study.

vii. Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE), with at least a Merit aggregate; plus a minimum of credit pass in the subject to be combined with Education are eligible for admission into the two-year degree programme in Education.

(C) Admission by Transfer to a University


Candidates applying for transfer admission into a University will be required among other things:

i. Purchase and complete the prescribed Application Form obtainable from the office of the Registrar (Admissions) of the University.

ii. Hold the minimum entry qualifications for admission into the University and Departmental entry requirements, prior to entry into the University from where they are seeking transfer.

iii. Be prepared to continue with the same courses as they were pursuing in the University from where they are seeking transfer.

iv To have made normally a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.

v. Satisfy the entry requirements set out for the Faculty/Departmental entry concerned.

The above is for guidance only as there are slight differences including nomenclature and structure among the universities. Each university is autonomous and thus free to plan and administer its academic programmes subject to the approval of its Senate, Governing council and the NUC.

POST GRADUATE PROGRAMMES

Admission into a post graduate programme is made direct through the University concerned. For this, the candidate must buy and complete the requisite forms and submit same to the university. The respective Universities usually announce or advertise when students can apply for post graduate programmes.

Post graduate programmes are generally under the auspices of the School of Post Graduate Studies which usually have an Dean in charge.

In some Universities and Departments, candidates must write qualifying examinations before being enrolled in some of the postgraduate programmes. These programmes are mainly in the areas of MBA, Banking and Finance, PGD in Economics, Law, MILD

Duration of Courses

(a) Postgraduate Diploma (Regular) – Two semesters


(b) Postgraduate Diploma (Sandwich) – Three Long Vacations

(c) Master’s degree (Regular) – 12 months for full-time and 3 Semesters for part-time.

(d) M.Ed. M.A. (Sandwich) three long vacations

(e) Ph.D. - 3 calendar years minimum and 5 calendar years maximum for full-time

3 calendar years minimum and 6 calendar years maximum for part-time.

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS FOR POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES

Post Graduate Diploma (PGD)
Candidates applying for post graduate diploma programmes should first possess the minimum entry requirements for admission into the first degree programmes in their areas of interest for postgraduate studies. Candidates with professional qualifications including HND must have obtained 5 credits in WASC or GCE O/L including English and Mathematics for admission for degree courses in Business Administration In addition, they should have at least one of the following qualifications

i) First Degree of the same University or other recognized Universities.

ii) HND or its equivalent in relevant areas with (Upper credit) level passes.

iii) Qualifications such as A.I.B., ACCA., ACMA., ICAN., BEEC., C.P.A., etc may also be considered by some Universities for admission for some programmes in the Faculties of Agriculture; Business Administration; Social Sciences, Education, and Arts.

iii) Candidates who hold qualifications other than the above which are acceptable to the Board of the School of Postgraduate Studies, and Senate of the University.

Masters Degree

Candidates applying for a masters degree programme must posses one of the following:

i) A first degree of the same University or of other recognized Universities in the relevant disciplines with at least a good second class honours.


(ii) Postgraduate Diplomas in the relevant disciplines from the University or other recognized University with at least a credit level passes.

(iii) An unclassified first degrees with scores of 50% or above.

(iv) For M.Ed degree, candidates with at least, good second class single honour degree in teaching subjects plus at least a merit level pass at Postgraduate Diploma in Education, or those who hold a third class honours degree in Education or a single honors degree in teaching subjects with at least 5 years postgraduate teaching experience, plus Postgraduate Diploma in Education passed at Merit level or above.

(v) For MPA, candidates should, in addition to (i) and (ii) above, be serving administrative /managerial staff in the Public or Private sector with a minimum of two years post-qualification cognate experience.

(vi) Professional Fellowship qualifications such a FIMLT, FNILT, NIPR, or their equivalents obtained through examination. Such Candidates must have worked as Senior Technologist (s) or in equivalent position(s) for at least three years.

(vii) Qualifications other than those listed above which are acceptable to the Senate of the University.

Doctorate Degree (Ph.D)

(i) A Masters degree of the same University or other recognized University appropriate for the proposed areas of study with a good grade point average (some Universities insist on minimum grade point average of 3.50 on a 5-point scale or ‘B’ average) provided that satisfactory research work formed part of the Masters degree programme.


(ii) Evidence of academic research is an advantage.

Master’s/Ph.D Programme

(a) A first class honours or second class honours (Upper Division) degree from the same University or other recognized University.


(b) A Masters degree of the same University or other recognized University appropriate for the proposed areas of study with a good grade point average (some Universities insist on minimum grade point average of 3.50 on a 5-point scale or ‘B’ average) provided that satisfactory research work formed part of the Masters degree programme.


POLYTECHNICS

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) conducts all direct admissions into the National Innovation Diploma (NID) and National Diploma (ND) programmes offered by all polytechnics and similar tertiary institutions in the country, except for candidates who enrolled in the appropriate Preparatory Course for National Diploma (PRE-ND), who may take the JAMB examination before registering for ND 1. Usually, a prospective candidate for national diploma programme applies to JAMB for application form, writes the matriculation examination and on the basis of his/her score in the examination, and other criteria that may be laid down by the proprietor of the institution, the candidate may be offered provisional admission. The final admission of the candidate however, depends on his/her meeting the minimum admission requirements as laid down by NBTE.

In the case of admissions into other programmes offered by the polytechnics, namely, the Higher National Diploma (HND) and the Preparatory Course for National Diploma (PRE-ND) the following procedure may apply.

Application forms are usually obtained from the individual institutions. Completed forms are returned to the institutions. Many institutions now provide on-line application/registration.

Admission of a candidate into a programme is the prerogative of the Academic Board of the institution which should ensure that the candidate meets the minimum entry requirements for the programme as laid down by the NBTE.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS INTO PREPARATORY COURSE FOR NATIONAL DIPLOMA PROGRAMME

For the Preparatory Course for National Diploma, the general entry requirement is five GCE O’Level / SSCE with minimum of pass grades in not more than two sittings in subjects relevant to the programme.

1. Pre-ND Science and Technology


a) GCE ‘O’ Level or SSCE with a minimum of pass grades ordinary passes or their equivalent in English Language and Mathematics and three subjects chosen from:

• Biology/Agricultural Science/Health Science
• Chemistry
• Physics
• Geography
• Further Mathematics
• Technical Drawing/Fine Arts
• Food and Nutrition
• Basic Electricity
• Metal Work
• Auto Mechanics
• General Metal Work
• General Woodwork
• Home Economics
• Religious Knowledge
• Economics
• Clothing and Textile
• Statistics.

Choice of the three subjects determines the programme in which the candidate will finally enroll for the National Diploma.

b) National Technical Certificate (NTC) or equivalent with pass grades in the relevant trade and passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and one subject from 1(a) above.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION INTO NATIONAL DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES.

The minimum entry requirements for the ND/NID Programmes are as follows:

1. SSCE/GCE ordinary level or its equivalent with credit passes in five subjects relevant to the programme obtained at not more than two sittings;


2. Five credit passes in relevant subjects obtained at the final examination of an NBTE recognised Preparatory Course for National Diploma (PRE-ND) offered in a polytechnic or similar tertiary technical institution.

3. The National Technical Certificate (NTC) or National Business Certificate (NBC) with pass in a trade plus four relevant academic subjects or National Vocational Certificate (NVC) final and at least a pass in English Language.

4. A satisfactory score in the UTME examination, which is conducted annually by JAMB.

5. Holders of the Advanced National Technical Certificate (ANTC) may be given enhanced placement in the ND Programme provided they have also met the minimum entry requirements into the ND programmes and obtained good grades in the ANTC Examinations.

Applicants for Technology Programmes

All candidates applying for Science and Technology Programme must possess a credit level pass in Mathematics and at least a pass in English Language. Exception is Art and Design in which a credit level pass is required in English Language (not Literature in English).

Applicants for Business Studies Programmes:

Candidates should have credit passes in English Language and Mathematics.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION INTO HND PROGRAMMES

Applicants who possess the following qualifications may be considered for direct admission into Higher National Diploma Programmes:

1. The National Diploma (ND) or National Innovation Diploma (NID) with a minimum of lower credit pass in the discipline obtained from an NBTE accredited programme plus a minimum of one-year Post-ND or Post-NID cognate work experience in the field of specialisation.

2. Candidates with ND or NID at pass level and a minimum of two-year post-ND or Post-NID work experience may also be considered.

3. For the HND Bilingual Secretarial Studies Programme, a pass in the relevant language at the SSCE or equivalent qualifications will be an advantage. This is in addition to 1 – 2 above. All candidates are expected to pass an intensive 16 weeks language course prior to the commencement of the programme.

Candidates wishing to enroll for a course of study in a College of Education must write the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination conducted by JAMB. All admissions into the Colleges of Education is through the UTME.
