The National Teachers' Institute, Kaduna was established in 1976 primarily because of the pressing need in the country for trained, qualified teaching staff at all levels of the educational system. The Institute's enabling Law charged it among others with the responsibility of "providing courses of instruction leading to the development, upgrading and certification of teachers as specified in the relevant syllabus using Distance Education Techniques.
Mandate To provide Courses of Instruction leading to the Upgrade, Development and Certification of Nigerian Teachers as specified in the relevant Syllabuses using the Distant Learning Systems.

The TRCN acts as the regulatory body for the teaching profession. The establishment of TRCN was the climax of the nationwide strike in 1992 by the Nigeria Union of Teachers which made the establishment of the body one of the conditions for calling off the strike. The Federal Government accepted the condition and in 1993 enacted the TEACHERS REGISTRATION COUNCIL OF NIGERIA (TRCN) ACT NO. 31 OF 1993.
The actual implementation of the Act began in 1999 with the appointment of a Registrar/Chief Executive in the person of Anjikwi M. Ciwar. Today TRCN is a household name in the Nigerian Education system.
