PROFESSIONAL BODIES / INSTITUTES IN NIGERIA.

There is a current move towards professionalism in the various disciplines, professions and practices. To raise and maintain the standards, maintain ethics, check and promote professionalism, the professional bodies have come in and are backed by rules and acts of parliament.
The professional bodies are not established by government but by professionals in the chosen field of Endeavour. Membership of a professional body qualifies one to use the certain titles after his name such as FCA meaning Fellow of Chartered Accountants.
Each professional body goes through two stages of recognition. The first stage is registration with the corporate affairs commission and its recognition as a body corporate. Thereafter, after meeting some set guidelines and standards which includes a minimum member of membership, it moves into the second and final stage. This stage is the stage of "charter status” or recognition by the parliament. For this, there has to be a sponsored bill presented to parliament (The Nigerian National Assembly made up of the House of Representatives and The Senate) for a Charter status for the body/institute or association. After the bill is passed by the National Assembly, the institute or professional body can add the word "Chartered” to its name. For instance Institute of Chartered Accounts of Nigeria - ICAN, The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria – CIBN, etc. are all chartered professional bodies.
The various professional bodies (more than 81 at the moment) in the country have helped tremendously in check-mating quackery in the professions, thereby protecting Nigerians and the honor and dignity of the professions. Outstanding here are the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria - PSN, Nigerian Medical Association - NMA, Nigerian Bar Association - NBA and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria - ICAN.
It is advisable that before joining any of the professional bodies/associations you check to ensure that it is recognized by law and that the sponsors are reputable men and women in the society. This is so because so many institutes are springing up by days and some with funny names and other objectives. Some of the institutes simply advise you to enroll and get some titles to your name such as Member of so and so, Associate of so and so or Fellow of this and that institute. Do not waste your hard earned money and reputation with such quack bodies or what we may call "five for one kobo” institutes/associations. It is better for you to burn the mid-night candle and qualify for membership in a nationally and internationally recognized institute like the Nigeria Institute of Management -NIM, ICAN, CIBN, CIIN, CIMN, CIPM, ANAN, and others.
