Approval for the establishment of a University in Nigeria has to be received from the National Universities Commission (NUC), a parastatal under the Federal ministry of education. The NUC does not only approval the establishment of Universities but also is responsible for the accreditation of all courses offered in any university in Nigeria. Thus, with respect to a University in Nigeria there are two levels of approval:
1. Approval to establish the university
2. Approval to run a given course or set of disciplines/programmes in the university.
To achieve the above, the NUC prescribes minimum standards to be met by prospective new universities seeking registration and approval for to run/offer particular programs.
Below are some of the requirements from the NUC for the establishment of a university in Nigeria.
