RESEARCH INSTITUTES IN NIGERIA

There are well over 66 research institutes in Nigeria majority of which are established and funded by the Federal Government. They aim at discovering better ways of doing things, improving the knowledge base and raising standards in specific fields. The research institutes also have a mandate to make research findings, technology and knowledge adaptable and applicable to local Nigerian situations.
Majority of the research institutes are into scientific and technological research. The research institutes can be broken down into 4 categories based on major areas of research.

Most of the research institutes duplicate efforts as there are similar research institutes with same mandate and focus. The number above could be more if we add the Colleges of Medicine in the various universities. These centers of excellence also have mandates to, and do conduct, many and ongoing researches in health and medicine.
The research institutes are under the auspices of the parent federal ministries. For instance, the agricultural research institutes are either under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture or under the Federal Ministry of Water Resources.
